S3 Web Design has now been in business for one year. Both Mike and I have worked like mad and learnt so much. As time has gone on we have each focussed on different parts of the business. Mike, being a software engineer has been coding madly.
We both had a very definate view of how we wanted our business to be. We had both used many different free content management systems and blogs like this one and were both frustrated at the limitations. Flash based editors would take an age to upload pictures, WYSIWYG editors that jumped around and never behaved consistently and worst of all visual editors, albeit with an html option, that would rewrite your code as you changed from one display mode to another. Frustrating to say the least!
It became obvious that many of these systems had been generated for people who were essentially graphic designers and the main aim was to produce pretty websites. No real attention was paid to the way that these systems bloated the code and hampered the search engines.
We cared however, with a passion, and decided to design and write in PHP, CSS and XHTML a website design system written using SEO and coding principles as the fundamental starting point. We decided to get the basics of code compliance and functionality correct and to bring in the design aspect once the foundations were sound. Good clean coding with systems that work reliably were the first step. You see, even as I write this blog in the HTML view, the cursor is disappearing under the bottom of the window!
To properly SEO blogs and CMS systems you invariably have to find add-ons. We decided to design a content management system where the structure, navigation, coding and SEO were there as fundamental elements of the CMS.
